What is the Bayou Bowl?

The Bayou Bowl is an All Star game between the best graduated players in Texas and Louisiana. The idea for the Bayou Bowl was originally conceived  in 2002 by the director of the Baytown/West Chambers County Economic Development Foundation, the President of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, the incoming chair of the Greater Houston Football Coaches Assoc. (who is also the head coach of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown) and a local banker from Amegy Bank in Baytown.

The game was so well received with more than 8,000 spectators that the group decided that the 2004 game had the potential of generating considerable additional funds.  The Bayou Bowl has affiliated with Shriners Hospitals for Children with net proceeds going to this worthwhile charity. One day of the players week goes to visit the hospital.

Who is the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association and the Louisiana Football Coaches Association?

The Greater Houston Football Coaches Association (GHFCA) is an organization whose membership is comprised of high school and junior high school coaches in the greater Houston, TX area.  Revenues are derived from membership dues and donations by private individuals and companies.  Its purpose is to promote high school football by fostering professionalism among coaches and serving as mentors and advocates for high school football players.  The Louisiana Football Coaches Association is a similar organization and participates with us.

Financial Support for the Bayou Bowl comes from the following:

§         Donations

§         Advertisements/Sponsorships

Who is Involved?

There are numerous groups involved in the development of this event:

1)      The Greater Houston Football Coaches Association

2)      Louisiana Athletics (2003) & Louisiana Coaches Association (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008)

3)      Baytown Area/West Chambers County Economic Development Foundation

4)      Baytown Chamber of Commerce

5)      Harris County Houston Sports Authority

6)      City of Baytown

7)      Houston/Galveston Area Shriners

Each of these entities work to ensure the success of the Bayou Bowl.  The event not only promotes high school football but promotes Baytown, the Houston Area and the State of Louisiana.  The game also provides a positive economic impact on the host area.

A steering committee has been developed with each member participating at assigned levels.  The steering committee is currently being headed by Baytown’s Former Mayor Pete Alfaro.

Bayou Bowl
2003,  2004,  2005,  2006, 2007, 2008

The 2003 game exceeded the expectations of all involved.  The organization was able to generate more than $100,000 to bring the game to fruition.  The 2004 game generated enough profit to benefit the Shrine Hospitals for Children.  The 2005 game was the most successful of the three generating $29,000 for the Shrine Hospitals for Children.  Each year the games are increasingly successful with the most recent game generating $37,000 and a record attendance.  Sponsors are primarily local to the Baytown area, and there is a need to develop this into the greater Houston area and Louisiana.

The game was televised by Fox Sports Net Southwest more than five times throughout the southwest and drew the attention of many newspapers and radio stations.

There were some 10,000 fans in attendance (many of those from the State of Louisiana).  Proceeds went to scholarships for Greater Houston Football Coaches Assoc. and Louisiana Athletics, as well as, to the Shrine Hospitals for Children.

Why a Charity?

The Bayou Bowl now in its seventh year and has further developed the organization with a steering committee, executive committee and committee structure.  While we are still obligated to the Houston Area Coaches Association and the Louisiana Coaches Association for scholarship monies, we feel that affiliation with a charity that is recognized throughout the country will benefit both the Bayou Bowl Organization and the charity (Shrine Hospitals for Children).
